Rules.

101 of them. Built from experience, failure, embarrassment, and the occasional moment of actual clarity. Some came from people I respected. Most came from situations I’d rather not repeat.

Rule 09

Consistency beats motivation every time.

I didn't just read that somewhere. I proved it. Thirty years in tech, operations, and sales. Showed up when I didn’t feel like it more times than I can count. The feeling caught up eventually.

The showing up is what built the thing.

I broke one of my own rules once. Spectacularly.

Rule 42

Never date a co-worker.

I had a manager in my early career who drilled this into me.

“You don’t get your honey where you make your money.”

Very 90s. Very true. I believed it.

And then I met her.

I spent months trying to take her to lunch. She kept saying no. So I started inviting her entire department. She’d come with the group. I’d get to sit across from her for an hour. This went on longer than I’d like to admit.

One Friday she finally said yes. Just the two of us. I insisted on paying. Grabbed the check with real confidence. Reached for my wallet.

It wasn’t there.

She paid.

I wanted to disappear into the floor. We laugh about it to this day.

She eventually left for another job. About a week later, my pager went off.

911. Call immediately.

I called. We talked. I asked her to dinner.

That was 31 years ago.

Rule 42 still stands.
I just found the one exception worth making.
